Abstract

Science-fiction has acquired a unique place in literature and cinema, and its influence in different branches of art is seen. Music, sculpture, etc. are examples of arts. As science-fiction influenced art movements in the 20th Century, graphic design as an art discipline has also affected. Futurism, which emerged in the first quarter of the 20th century, was in interaction with science fiction, although it did not have a purpose of science fiction. Rather than human psychology and emotions, their work is the subject of motion, speed passion, praise for mechanization, the mechanized human body, and the fictitious futurism. In the seventies, cyberpunk, which is a sub-genre of science fiction literature and evolved into the art movement in time, focuses on issues similar to futurism. The heroines created by the communication age, such as chaos, internet madness and hackerism, are told under the science fiction framework with a fiction style approach. Unlike futurism, cyberpunk dreams of a pessimistic and hopeless future. Cyberpunk offers a very rich infrastructure in graphical narrative as it develops in parallel with computer technology and constantly refers to the visual codes of the future. In this study, graphic design elements of “Blade Runner”, a cyberpunk science-fiction film directed by Ridley Scott will be examined and the connections between cyberpunk and graphic design will be investigated.
