Abstract

Upon looking at art history, history and social dimension can be observed to leave a significant effect on artists. After the foundation of the Turkish Republic after the Ottoman Empire, with the help of the revolutions and renovations that took place, there occurred a number of transformations in the social structure. The economic development that gradually took place in the country also affected the social development and particularly the Turkish woman started to take place in the social life more freely. Some of the artists, who were educated in Europe and later turned back to the country, featured the Anatolian woman in their paintings that they made to reflect the Anatolian culture and made references to the cultural and somewhat traditional roots of the country. Some painters painted women, who are leading a more Westernized style of life, in spaces outside the house where they are more social and active. This article, titled as “Portrayal of Modern Woman in the Contemporary Turkish Painting During the First Half of the XX Century”, investigates how the society underwent historical, social and economic transformations after the transition to the Turkish Republic in the wake of the Ottoman Empire were portrayed through women in paintings. The study analyses how the woman was portrayed in paintings through examining artists’ most important works.
