Abstract

Although the term "shamanism" has commonly been defined as a system of belief, opinions vary on whether it is a religion or belief. As the definition of shamanism is currently controversial within the world of beliefs, what is primarily questioned is the identity of the shaman. There are responsibilities undertaken by the shaman to their community and rituals performed by them in times of need for curing diseases, deaths, funerals and fortunetelling; which can provide the description of the content of shamanism in a sense. This study hereby attempts to discuss how women are positioned as shamanesses as they perform aforementioned rituals undertaken by shamans, and the rituals of shamanesses. What is discussed in our article hereby are the significances that women have reached with their female characteristics within mythical sense, the position of an ordinary woman within shamanic rituals and the social position of a shamaness in terms of social gender through the comparison of definitions and examples of the responsibilities of the shamaness.
