Abstract

In this paper, the determinants of female labor force is analysed in Turkey. Conducted spatial econometric model and OLS econometric model results show that women heavily weight the leisure time. In other words, their participation decision is more of under the influence of social, traditional, cultural and familiastic factors determinacy relative to sole economic factors determinacy. Since women have different duties in the family and in the society they give more special importance to non-market activities and the leisure time. These results are also verified by the women employment level in different occupation groups in pre and post cisis years. In the years 2008 and 2009 women choose to work in certain sectors but when the economy recovers itself in 2010 year, they choose not to work and leave the market to their husbands and male family members. In other words ‘The Added Worker Hypothesis’ realizes in these years especially in easily substitutable male service sector jobs. This paper also claims that service sector jobs is more compatible with micro labor theory since one of its tools as reservation wage ant the cost of the leisure time make this required insight about their participation decision. New employment generation policies should be determined by taking into the consideration of their responsibilities, cares, and sensitiveness towards the leisure time.
