Abstract

Literary pieces play a key role in reflecting the cultural aspects of a society. Literary translation ensures the interaction between different cultures. Cultural elements have a vital role in the translation of literary pieces. Due to distance between two cultures, the cultural elements in the source text may not be fully comprehended by the target reader. The aim of this study is to analyse the English translations of cultural elements in My Father’s House and The Idle Years by Orhan Kemal in accordance with the translation methods proposed by Peter Newmark and Lawrence Venuti. In the study, the translation methods of Newmark, which are preferred by the translator and dominate the target text, are identified. Based on these findings, which one of Venuti’s strategies dominates the entire target text is determined. It is found that the translator adopts a target-focused translation and the dominating strategy in target text is domestication.
