ANALYZING THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MARITAL ADJUSTMENT, STRESS-COPING STYLES AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of communication and stress-coping skills, which are important components of marriage, on marital adjustment. This study used a descriptive relational screening design. 544 married people composed the research sample. 322 (59.2%) of the participants are female and 222 (40.8%) are male. 79 (14%) have an elementary education degree, 128 (23.6%) have a secondary education degree, and 335 (61.8%) have a high education degree. The data were collected using the Marital Adjustment Test, the Communication Skills Assessment Scale, and a personal information form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including median(min-max), frequency, and percentage. The Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient was used to analyze the association between marital adjustment, stress-coping styles, and communication skill. There is a statistically significant weak correlation between stress-coping styles and marital adjustment. However, there is no statistically significant correlation between communication skills and marital adjustment.
