Abstract

Ahmet Mithat Efendi, who is known as “hâce-i evvel” (Person who disseminates various information with a basic language for people progress in both scientifically and mentally) in Turkish literature, opened a school for children in Rhodes where he was exiled, taught in darülfünun, darülmuallimat and darüşşafaka and wanted to train the public with his novels. In this article, it is sought an answer to question of what kind of teacher he was as an author in scope of The Gypsy novel by Ahmet Mithat Efendi. Critical Pedagogy was used to answer this question. Gypsies are among the oppressed, especially Pedagogy of The Oppressed by Paulo Freire was used as base. The Gypsy novel has been evaluated within the framework of the concepts of “dehumanization”, “division into two”, “rule setting”, “existing” and “living”. In his novel, he wants to prove that Gypsies can be trained like other people. There are two main protagonists in the novel: Şems Hikmet and Ziba. The author trains the Gypsy girl Ziba by Şems Hikmet. However, the Gypsy girl who is trained with a patriarchal authoritarian education cannot experience consciousness. She is alienated from herself and her culture. Apparently, the gypsy who move up the social ladder becomes a copycat slave. Briefly, Ahmet Mithat Efendi is a fatherly but authoritarian teacher as a author. It does not allow individual development of the Gypsy.
