Abstract

Abstract

Ankara is a historical city with thousands of years of settlement scene. The city, which was presumed to have been established during the Hittite period, was later dominated by Phrygian, Galatian, Roman, and Byzantine. The Turks, who came to Anatolia after Manzikert Victory, also settled in this historical city. In this study, the urban development of Ankara during the Seljuk period was discussed based on masjids and small dervish lodges. From these structures, it is understood that the Turks firstly settled in the inner citadel of Ankara Castle, and also the city only consisted of the castle by the end of the XIIth century. The neighborhoods were separated with respect to ethnic and religious groups, and non-Muslims, who were removed from the Inner Castle, were settled collectively around the Church of Clemens. Ankara, which was not a crowded settlement since it was a border city, was enlarged barely the castle and the city walls at the beginning of the XIIIth century. The first quarter outside the city walls was Kızılbey Quarter, located in west of the castle. The city had developed in two parts. This binary structure, which had been traced before the Turks, became more prominent during the Seljuk period.
