BATI MEDENİYETİ’NDE BİYOGRAFİ YAZIMI: ESKİÇAĞ GREK VE ROMA DÜNYASINDA YAZILMIŞ BİYOGRAFİK ESERLERE DAİR BİR DENEME

Abstract
Batı Medeniyeti kültürel kimliğini oluştururken Eskiçağ Grek (Antik Yunan) ve Roma devirlerini kendisine temel almıştır. Bu bağlamda edebî, sanatsal, bilimsel ve felsefî altyapısını söz konusu devirleri esas alarak meydana geliştirmiştir. Eskiçağ Grek dünyasının politik açıdan polisler şeklinde dağınık, birbirinden ayrı müstakil yapılarda olması Batı zihniyetinin bireyci bakış açısı ve yaşam tarzının bir yansımasıdır. Roma devrinde merkezî bir siyasî yapı oluşturulmasına rağmen bireyin öne çıktığı toplum yapısı devam etmiştir. Tüm bunlar ışığında, bireyciliğin Grek ve Roma dünyasında ön planda olması sebebiyle bir biyografi yazımı geleneği oluşturulmuştur. Bu eserlere, Doğu-Batı medeniyetleri arasındaki farklılığın vurgulanması bağlamında da bakılabilmektedir. Yazarların hayat hikayelerini yazdıkları kişilerin genellikle idareci ve asker oldukları görülmektedir. Çalışmada; Eskiçağ Grek ve Roma devirlerinde kaleme alınan belli başlı biyografik eserler ve yazarları kronolojik olarak ele alınmıştır. Makalede, hem yazarların hayat hikayeleri hem de kaleme aldıkları eserler genel hatlarıyla ele alınarak, araştırmacılar için ana kaynak olan söz konusu eserlerin bir dökümü yapılmıştır.

Abstract
While forming the cultural identity of Western Civilization, it was based on the Ancient Greek and Roman periods. In this context, it has developed its literary, artistic, scientific and philosophical infrastructure on the basis of these periods. The fact that the ancient Greek world was politically scattered and separate from each other in the form of policemen is a reflection of the individualistic perspective and lifestyle of the Western mentality. Despite the establishment of a central political structure in the Roman period, the social structure in which the individual stood out continued. In the light of all these, a tradition of writing a biography has been established, since individualism was at the forefront in the Greek and Roman worlds. These works can also be viewed in the context of emphasizing the difference between East-West civilizations. It is seen that the people whose life stories are written by the writers are generally administrators and soldiers. In the study; Major biographical works written in the Ancient Greek and Roman periods and their authors are discussed chronologically. In the article, both the life stories of the authors and the works they wrote were discussed in general terms, and a breakdown of the mentioned works, which is the main source for researchers, was made.
