Abstract

This research aims to reveal the metaphors of teacher candidates regarding to faculty culture. Phenomenological approach was used in the research. Interviews were conducted to reveal deep meanings expressed by students for faculty culture. The population of the study consists of senior teacher candidates attending to Anadolu University Faculty of Education during the 2014-2015 academic year. Teacher candidates’ metaphors of faculty culture were grouped into 3 main themes named rules, relationships and faculty. A total of 7 sub themes appeared under these main themes. The sub themes consisted of 22 categories and 62 metaphors. Teacher candidates used metaphors mostly in the abstract notions category to describe faculty culture. Then metaphors that are mostly concrete were used in the categories named object, place and person in the respective order. It can be asserted that using concrete metaphors to describe an abstract notion like culture suits the concretization aim of metaphor use. To describe faculty culture, teacher candidates used abstract metaphors frequently but not as much as the concrete ones. Also, it was found that positive metaphors were used more frequently.
