Abstract

In G. Marcel’s philosophy, the notion of ‘person’ as a homo viator occupies a central place. Without discussing his view of person in detail, it is nearly impossible to have a clear understanding of his whole philosophy. According to Marcel, human is a being who tries to realize himself through selecting to exist, deciding between ‘to live’ with his own will, which has not been determined what to happen before, and ‘to exist’. In this way, existence for person means to create himself by opening himself to out of himself and exceeding himself. In other words, the experience of being arises in communion. To be is to participate in being. Therefore, person is a free being who attempts to establish conformable relations with the nature, otherselves and the Absolute Thou (God) at the ultimate point, apprehending ‘an ontological integrity’ while asking to recognize his opportunities and limits.
