Abstract

With the rise of globalization, competition among countries has become more important, and countries have turned to explore new sources of wealth in order to gain a competitive edge. While preliminaries can be measured by elements such as international competition, commercial superiority, economic superiority, industrial superiority, human capital is accepted as the most important wealth source of the competition. The experience that South Korea experienced from the mid-twentieth century to the present is shown as an example in this respect. The most basic characteristic of the human capital is that the individuals are equally well-equipped like education and health. The most important condition of an educated individual is the existence of a qualified higher education system. Thanks to a qualified higher education system, both human capital will gain strength and countries will gain internationally advantageous position. The quality of universities is determined by measurements made by specific organizations worldwide. Worldwide, measurement organizations consider certain conditions such as number of publications, number of citations, number of students, number of teaching staff per student, and physical competence. Higher education ranking systems can be done for different purposes, sometimes helping universities analyze their current situation and work in that direction, sometimes helping countries to higher education policies. In this study, the ranking systems of eight institutions ranking universities in the world and ranking institutions in Turkey and the basic criteria they are based on are explained and the current status of the higher education institutions in Turkey in this ranking system and the status of universities in the last part of the study are explained. Will try to explain what they can do to make it better. As a result of the study, it is aimed that the Turkish higher education system will become more qualified and help to come to a competitive position in the international arena.
