Abstract

One of the most important cultural developments after tanzimat reform is the opening of press houses for every town center. In these printing houses the bookkeeping operations were prioritized and besides annuals, calendars, and literary and scientific works were printed. In many provinces official province gazettes were printed. As a result of these developments a printing house was founded in Ma’müratül-aziz and an official province gazette was started to be printed. Ma’muratü’l-aziz province press was founded in 1866 in the period of Vali Hacı İzzet Paşa. Seven years after the foundation, the gazette began its broadcasting life. The gazette paused its printing in certain times and changed its name, and continued its broadcasting life until 1934. In this respect the gazette pioneered in the press life of Elazığ. Ma’muratü’l-aziz Gazette was printed between 1883 and 1914 and 1475 copies were published. After alphabet reform the name of the gazette had been changed as Elaziz. The gazette continued its press life discontinuously as a result of privatizing of the printing houses in 1930s and eventually ended its publication in 1934. The most leading feature of the gazette’s publishing was to make the people develop and make them hear the changes in the world. The gazette precisely worked for this aim. It served as culturally and sociologically. In this study, Ma’muratü’l-aziz Gazette will be introduced, and its publishing policy, printing period, writers, and physical characteristics will be evaluated. Information about its view to the events, its contribution to the era’s cultural and logical background will be presented.
