Abstract

In early 2000s, conditions changed due to competition among holding companies, successive seizure of banks, and simultaneous possession of media organizations by most of the bank owners. Additionally, journalists and columnists played a direct role in such process, took sides and advocated their bosses. This atmosphere in the media led to the emergence of a new concept which can be described as "trigger-media". "Triggerman" in the media is the name given to a journalist who “directly” advocates the interests of his/her boss or holding, with his/her articles and attitude. This interpretative article studies the process that started with the 2001 crisis and subsequently the seizure of Pamukbank by the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF) and the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA). The article scrutinizes the concept of "trigger-media" as created by the "media wars" as a result of such process. In this context, this article studies the five-year period from 2002 to 2007, and examines the unlimited competition and trigger-media among the media organizations owned by Doğan Group and Çukurova Group with regard to "media ethics".
