Abstract

Muradiye is a district of the Van province, currently lives around 51,000 people. The aim of this study is to examine the population development in Muradiye in the Republican period and current demographic structure and education status of district’s population. The study is a descriptive study and the data of TurkStat constitute the most important data sources. The population of the district increased from 1927 to 1985 and decreased greatly during the period 1985-1990 as Çaldıran was a district in 1987. The population of the district that increased again between 1990-2000 has decreased after 2000. The development of the rural population in the district is parallel to the development of the total population of the district. The population development of the Muradiye town was generally parallel to development of the total and rural population but decreased between 1940-1945 and followed a different course. Again in recent years, while the total population of the district and the rural population is decreasing, the population of the Muradiye town continues to increase. The population of the district of Muradiye is very young and the rate of children is 38%. The working age population is 58% and the elderly population is around 4%. In the district where total dependence rate is 73%, the rate of youth dependence is 66% and the elderly dependency rate is 7%. The high share of children in the total population caused a high level of total dependency and youth dependency ratio. The high proportion of the dependent population means that the burden on the working population is high. In the district where the literacy rate is around 93%, this value is 98% for men and 87% for women. When the educational status of the literate population is examined, the ratio of literate and primary school graduates in women is 72.6%; and 52% for men. The percentage of graduates of secondary and higher education institutions is 27.4% for females and 48% for males.
