Abstract

The camel has an significant place not only in Arab peoples' lives but also in Turkish tribes' lives. It is a enormous part of the lives of Oguz, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkmen and Uighur Turks. Its meat, milk, and skin is an sign of richness of nomadic culture. Being a good fellow traveller of long roads increased the importance of camel in Anatolia. It has presevered its significant place in almost every period of Turkish history with his active role into nomadic life. As riding, and load animal not only the economic life but also the military power has been the biggest helper. As result many words, terms, idioms and proverbs related to camel have taken place in the vocabulary of Turkish. Ottaman Turkish language is also a very rich language in terms of the words related camels. In addition to Turkish words, Arabic orijinated words have also been widely used. Specially the words used in the teaching of Arabic in the Ottoman madrasas are important sources of reference in terms of the use of the words related to the camel. Studies on words will contribute significantly to the detection and explaining the meaning of these words. Knowledge of these words will reveal the role of camel in the social, economic and military life of the Turks, and answer to the question of why the majority of Ahterî-i Kebir's words, which has been used for five centuries, is devoted to camel related terms. In this study; it was wanted to reveal the importance the camel in of human life with its use of multi-purpose like carrying, nutrition, transportation, war vehicle as an important part of daily life. he aim is to contribute to new studies related to this subject. For this purpose, Muslihiddin Mustafa Ahterî's Ahterî-i Kebir dictionary was consulted.There are many words related to camel in the dictionary, but it has been determined that there is no study on these words in the zone of language. The basic method of the study is the screening of the existing vocabulary of the Ahterî-i Kebir and the evaluation of the material obtained as a result. The data were analyzed by document analysis method. First, the words related to the names of the camels in the work were identified, classified according to the meaning they carry, in a lexical system alphabetically ordered.
