Abstract

Hatayi is a kind of flower motif used variegating of various surfaces. It is suggested that its origins are based on Central Asia. The quality silk fabrics on which the decorations representing the flowers are processed and the factories where these silks are weaved have been called in the same names. In Ottoman geography, the need for embroidered fabric was firstly met by imports, in general. At the beginning of the 18th century, demand for Hatayi and other high quality fabrics increased. In 1708, the Istanbul haircloth factory was built, and was put into operation in the middle of 1710. The authorization of the factory was transferred into Hüseyin Agha. In the meantime, expansion of the factory has become a matter of concern. About a year later, however, it became the current issue to use the forty looms built or would be built by expanding the factory as a Hatayi factory. In addition, preparations for Hatayi factory lasted about one year until 1721. Firstly, an estimated budget of 24,000 then 30,000 qurush was determined for the production of Hatayi initiated for being a sample on the haircloth looms, and for building and controlling these looms. It was decided that the repayment of this money, which would be financed by the Treasury in installments, would be made in installments again. Apart from the installments to be paid to the treasury, a certain amount has been determined as the profit share of the loan given to the name of the Mir. At the end of the preparations, Hüseyin Agha, the director of the haircloth factory, who was actually carrying out the works of the Hatayi factory, was officially appointed to it on September 22, 1721 as a manager. Hüseyin Agha also received the first installment which was 10,000 Esedian qurushes of the 30,000 gross budget to be paid by the treasury on behalf of the Mir in order to finance the construction and operation expenses. This date has been the official establishment date of the Hatayi factory whose construction activities started under the supervision of Hussein Aga and gave its first samples in the end of 1719. A significant portion of the money whose first installment was paid was spent on construction and operating expenses. For this purpose, money was given to the foremen Yorgi, who was brought from Chios, his assistant Manol and other workers from Chios. Raw silk from Chios and machine materials were purchased. The activity initiated by Hussein Aga, has not reached its exact target. Managers appointed after him have made efforts to operate the business. It will be referred in the article to the story of the establishment and operation of the Hatayi factory.
