Abstract

Death means that human beings move from physical to metaphysical world. Not only according to our beliefs but also according to many beliefs, death is only the end of life in this world. The dead is just the body. After death, the soul continues to live in the metaphysical world. This transition event has an important place in terms of folk literature. In every nation the event of death is followed by certain rituals which vary on beliefs and culture. For this reason, it is important to be knowledgeable about the customs and belief systems on death. Even before the old Turks met with Islam; they believed in religious values such as spirit-body, heaven-hell, angel-devil, sin-exaltation and world-afterdeath. These values have guided their lives on a regular basis. In the past, laments were burned, ceremonies were arranged and meals were prepared in honour of the people who died in the Göktanrı Faith. Even the dead were buried with their weapons and horses. With the effect of the Islam on Turks, similar customs have changed gradually but still being followed . Kazakhs is a society which is connected with their customs and traditions. In all stages of human life, there are rituals that fit their values. The events such as birth, wedding, and circumcision are celebrated in a festive way, but when they face a painful circumstances like death, people share the pain of the family , having all relatives beside with them on their hard day . At the same time, they changed this incident to the ceremony in accordance with the seriousness of death. Besides the religious rituals such as reading Qur'an, Hatim, for the dead. Old rituals still occur nowadays as lamentation, hair tearing, certain meals which are served after the dead on the 3rd,7th and 40th days after the death .Although the customs and beliefs of Kazakh people around the death have similarities with other Turkish tribes in general, they have some differences that are specific to their national values. Since Kazakhstan has a great geography, there are differences in terms of living , customs and even language (Kazakh is spoken in some cities and Russian in others ) change from the east to the west, from the north to the south. This article describes the beliefs about the death and burial and condolence of Kazakhs living in Oskemen city of East Kazakhstan region .
