Abstract

Health literacy is one of the most important issues that determine the health behavior of individuals. World Health Organization defined health literacy as “the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health”. Most of the studies in the literature are cross-sectional. Most of these studies show that insufficient health literacy level has negative effects on health outcomes, health care costs and quality of life of the individual. In the case of insufficient health literacy, admission rates to hospital / emergency services increase, compliance with medical treatment decreases, the ability to understand the prescriptions and treatment properly decreases, and the screening rates decrease. Studies showed that inadequate / limited health literacy is strongly associated with mortality in elder groups. Improving health literacy is very important and requires a multifaceted approach in order to achieve individual / social well-being and to increase the level of health and welfare. Due to the limited number of studies, studies with high level of evidence are needed.
