Abstract

In our country, slums have increased as a result of rapid migration from our cities, villages, towns and small cities which developed after 1950s. Last 30-40 years in the context of the developing world and neoliberal policies in Turkey and this was made to avoid settlements, which were conducted under the name of urban renewal projects. The Housing Development Administration of Turkey (TOKI), which is a governmental institution, increased the efficiency of housing after 2000s in a highly efficient manner. Its primary objective is to meet the housing needs of the society and to prevent the squattering. However, projects aimed at families with low incomes generally have to be built on the periphery of the city. Apparently the shanties have been erected, but instead of them, TOKI houses are similar to squatters in many respects. In this study, the similarities between TOKI applications aiming to solve the shanties, squatter and housing problems, and the formation of squatter and TOKI houses will be discussed.
