Abstract

In terms of the concept of communication, visual expression possibilities are realized in various forms in graphic arts. Designing visual expression in graphic images creates graphical outputs that assume different functions in terms of content and form. Within graphic applications, design works with “communication” function, which are categorized in itself, such as pictograms, ideograms, typograms and logograms, can be gathered as various expression elements that can be expressed under the title of pictography. In this article, the historical and cultural characteristics of the said design applications which can be gathered under the name of pictography, their place in the graphic arts, their definition and how they can be handled “in terms of contemporary design methods” are explained in detail with respect to other graphic design products. When the findings are evaluated in terms of social and cultural dimensions of the design; It is seen that all the designs which have pictographic expression content meet in common points about symbol and symbolic expression concept in terms of communication culture. In these common grounds, it is understood that pictographic forms of expression have different characteristics which are unique design rules in terms of both cultural and contemporary communication concepts. In graphic design culture, pictographic narratives assume important functions in social and public life as special design subjects that can take place in almost any communication design.
