Abstract

Visual elements that are one of the basic means of the communication phenomenon have been used nearly in various forms at all communities since the existence of the humanity. In today’s modern communities, the visual elements are being perceived as a denser and more effective media along with the new opportunities offered by the technological developments. In this article, it is tried to explain how the book covers that are one of the important subjects of the communication design should be discussed in terms of “ideal design principles” in all its aspects. In this context, primarily how “the visual elements which are able to represent the integrity of any book according to the design principles” may be intellectually determined, is emphasized, then, once it is proceeded to the design phase; the visual elements representing the intellectual elements and “relations which fonts may establish as a typographic material” are evaluated in terms of visual perception and communication rules. It is understood that the most important factor in the book cover design in terms of graphic design principles is the methods of turning “the ideas which are able to represent the integrity of the book” into “the visual communication elements” in the most effective way as a result of examples examined in the successful and unsuccessful aspects. The application of the said methods at the highest level is directly based on the skill and experience of the graphic designer to use the power of his/her creativity.
