Folktales are between the novel and saga in Turkish literature. Folktales’ topics separate two as epic and love. It can be said that, epic folktales are kind of stories which were transformed from the saga. Even if the main topic is epical, love has a great importance too. In the ones that the main topic is love, factors like foreign land, longing, braking up, lie, slander stay on. The factors in the love folktales depend on to settle the people. The folktales are sung sometimes with a stringed instrument and told by a story teller or a minstrel in the traditional environments like coffeehouses with aconventional expression. In time, folktales transferred to the hand writings and pictured stone press, even if it’s very rare. With the establishment of the republic, urbanization and depend to that, the traditional methods were decreased and the folktales reorganised and pressed. Some of those stories which were half pictured wih the Latin characters were Wrap theirself up in a more realistic structure. Sürmeli Bey and Telli Senem story is one of them. Topically, a love story that deals with the intrafamilial relations. The main goal of the work is to determine the narrative structure of Sürmeli Bey and Telli Senem story and as depend to this, the episodes and to determine also based on this the motives in the context of transition from the folktale to the novel. For this deteremination, one of the text-based folklore theories Historical,Geographical Finnish School approach was used and as it’s basic research unit, S. Thompson’s motif-index was based on. As a consequence of the research, it’s been seen that there are motifs which are used in the daily life in the story. And it’s been determined that there is not a supernatural factors except one single part of the story which it’s been found in the many folktales, and in accordince with that information; the story is pretty realistic and that means this story is a transitional period work between traditional folktales and modern novel/story.
