Abstract

Painting, which described religious issues and was considered as a craft more than art in sixteenth century, started to revive with more authentic and freer paintings by changing range of subject in the following periods. Thus, apart from having this freedom, it got rid of being just a craft and then artworks and artists, which had freedom in thinking and transfer, emerged. Painting started to go towards to the object by gaining a dimension and artists took a big step forward to using cubism collage. Paper collages of Picasso and Braque brought a fresh breathe to the art and led to different trends. With the expressing of nineteenth century “artist” started to be an important identity in terms of society. It started to bring connections with people’s ordinary lives through feelings. This emotional approach of art started to be effective on emotion transfer of people. At this point artists discharged of stereotyping their works to ordinary moulds. After this, artworks, which were called neither painting nor sculpture and express emotions of the artist, the society and the audience and were sometimes applied on materials like piece of sheet, pieces of glass or piece of cloth, started to be created. One of the most important special artworks while proceeding from expression to constructivism is Kurt Schwitters’s merz design which he started in Hannover and created its smaller examples in Norway and England. In this study, material application of the artwork, expression power and socio-psychologic dimension of the artist and positive attitude which composed artwork have on the next generation was studied by discussing merz design.
