Abstract

In the 15th century, Ottoman Empire, previously a regional power, turned into a global power and became an important and only control center of eastbound trade routes. This caused problems for European powers and thus contributed to the beginning of the Age of Discovery. Despite discovery of new routes, Mediterranean was still important since eastbound routes went through this sea. Therefore, European states, particularly Britain and France that had colonies in the East and wanted to reach there via the shortest way, tried to obtain bases on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. This article explains how Great Britain that became the dominant sea power in Europe, following the War of the Spanish Succession, wanted to obtain the primary naval bases of on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
