Abstract

The general election of October 14, 1973 is an important threshold in Turkish political life. A new era began with the 1961 constitution for Turkey political, social and economic changes affecting the social structure, it is the starting point of a period when new political figures and actors enter the political arena. This diversity on the political front is also present on the political parties. This diversity manifests itself in the articulation of new segments to newly formed parties and voter profiles in the sixties and seventies. In the Republican Public Party (RPP) the effects of this change process are seen. The struggle for ideological positioning in the political spectrum, beginning at the end of the fifties for the CHP and matured within the party in the sixties, with the picture emerging as the result of the general election of 1973, the party seems to be in a social democratic transformation and gain a certain momentum. With the result of the election, the RPP cities have increased the vote, particularly in the slum areas and in the regions where the capitalist development in rural areas has not yet been completed. The 1973 general election results are an important threshold for the assessment of the CHP's social democratic rhetoric and policies.
