Abstract

We have analyzed a total of 5527 verses in 144 poems of Divan-ı Hikmet and identified 383 imperative sentences formed by the –GIl suffix (6,00%). Out of these word groups formed by –GIl suffix, 141 are in the form of -gıl, 45 are in the form of -gil, 166 are in the form of -ğıl and one is in the form of -ğil. The forms -kıl and -kil are not used at all. The total number of the -GIl suffixed word groups identified in the poems in 258 different forms is 347. And the number of word groups used four times or more are 128 (36,88%). The top five most frequently used words with these forms are respectively “yol” (“road”) used 43 times (the most used word group being “yolğa salgıl” which is used 35 times), “âşık” used 13 times, “özüng” used 11 times, “can” used 9 times and “tâat” used 8 times. Ahmet Yesevi mostly addresses the second person singular. This is evident in his poems. It is commented that the reason for the frequent use of -GIl suffix is that the text’s context is molded with religious matters and the aim of the poems is to cause terminal behaviors in the target audience.
