Abstract

The novel, called “The Call of The Sea”, by Kemal Bilbasar, is about the alienation of a teacher. The author deals with alienation caused by psychological and social factors, taking advantage of both socialistic and realistic insights. After covering the theoretical part of alienation, we pointed out the extent it applied to the main character of the novel. The conditions of the period and the depressed mood of the father of the main character have already caused alienation to him. We concentrated on why the main character’s struggle to escape from alienation, failed. We also evaluated the novel in terms of the social contradictions we often encounter in socialistic/realistic literatüre and the effort to give the typical. Accordingly, the author presented the social contradictions with a critical realistic understanding and handled the typical people in the conditions of the period.
