Abstract

Social media is extremely common communication tool and also mostly popular among young people. People mostly share in social media accounts to show themselves and to present their self. Social media users attach great importance to self presentation when sharing. Loneliness is one of the social problems of our era. Only individuals tend to social media in order to overcome the situation they are in and establish virtual relations with each other. Apart from this, loneliness also results in people offering themselves in different ways in social media in order to make friends. In the study, the correlation between, loneliness levels and social media use of social media users, and how these levels of loneliness affect self presentation and effects on the use of social media were investigated. The method of the study is the face-to-face survey with 400 university students. The Self Presentation Scale developed by Suk-Jae Lee vd. (1999) was used to detect the self presentation of the university students while using social media connection between self presentation and loneliness. Based on the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the effects of loneliness and self-presentation on the use of social media were searched to determine connection between self-presentation and loneliness
