Abstract

In recent years, university quotas in Turkey have increased significantly due to the education policy. There are no non-university cities in Turkey and a variety of college programs have been launched to meet the labor needs of the country. However, especially with the 2017 LYS, it is seen that some sections are not filled or the number of students does not reach the desired number. The programs which have been opened with a long effort and cost, to be closed because the university departments of the students do not prefer it. In this study, the occupancy rates of the associate degree programs according to the 2017 LYS placement results have been analyzed; like as section, geographical region, proximity to metropolis, population of the province, URAP score of the university. As a result of the research; it is seen that only the associate degree programs in Istanbul province are full. Excluding Eskisehir, Programs which have highest occupancy rate are in three most populated provinces in Turkey. There is a significant difference between the location of the programs and the occupancy rates (?2 = 523,14, p<0,05). Also there was a weak positive correlation between the population and the occupancy rate. Programs in provinces which have the most quota almost half of the programs are empty. There is a positive and almost medium relationship between empty quotas and total quotas (r(6460)=0.427, p<0.01). When we look at the distribution of quotas by region, we have seen that the quotas are concentrated in the western part of the country. There is a weak positive correlation between URAP scores of universities and university occupancy rate (r(616)=0.33, p<0.01). We also examined distance from the three and five most populous city in Turkey to location of programs. There was a positive moderate relationship (r=0.603) between the three crowded cities and occupancy rate, and also there was a very high relationship (r=0.886) between the five crowded cities and occupancy rate.
