Abstract

The 19th century -the Ottoman Empire faced serious wars, loss of land and the ways of salvation were seek in the context of various collective identities- was a period in which Turkish poetry was shaped by some novelty quests. If the themes such as homeland, nation, freedom, peace, Ottomanism, Turkishness, martyrdom and flag are examined, it can be seen the changing of these themes from Tanzimat to II. Meşrutiyet. In the poetry of this period, certain concepts are frequently used to increase the the nation's enthusiasm of war and to strengthen / keep the idea of belonging. In this article, themes such as "homeland", "nation", "Ottomanism", "Turkishness", "martyrdom" and "flag" will be examined over in the poems that shape the literary character of the period. The meanings attributed to the blood which is the envelope of the race will be determined in the process of forming a nation consciousness from multinational structured Ottoman towards national state in the modern sense
