MEDIA LITERACY LEVELS OF STUDENTS AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BİTLİS AND THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THESE LEVELS

Abstract

This study aims to present the ways how senior high school students use the media and the effects and purposes of such uses under the today’s increasingly important media literacy. In this context, means of communication which we use in our daily lives, such as TV, Internet and newspaper, are discussed and it is aimed to determine their frequency of using the Internet, daily hours of watching TV and reading newspaper and books, the programs they mostly watch on TV and their expectations from these programs. 463 students who study in the final year of high school in the school year of 2012-2013 in Bitlis participated in the study. The research data was obtained using the questionnaire prepared by the researcher. The software SPSS 16 was used in the analysis of data. The findings revealed that students watch TV for “less than 1 hour” and the means of communication they mostly use is “TV”. Also, students are of the opinion that messages in the media are generally “regulated”. Students are influenced from media mostly when buying movie, music and game CDs. Finally, the findings showed that media literacy is “important”.
