Abstract

Celebration of Calandar has been a tradition for centuries. It, one of the most important fun of the past, is known as the celebration of new year. According to local calendar in Trabzon and its surroundings area, Calandar corresponds to new year’s eve night. It is accepted that 13th night of January is as Calandar night. This night is a different importance in the province of Trabzon which was once home to the Pontus Greek Empire. Calandar is stil celebrated with traditions and customs staying from the Pontus Greeks in Livera (Yazlık), a forest village where the lush forests are friends with the blue sky at district of Maçka of Trabzon. While the old year is being bid farewell, the new year is called ‘hello’ with new hopes in this night. The night of Calandar, which is celebrated with rituals, tongue twisters, folk songs, horons (a folk dance of the eastern Black Sea coastral region) and games, is tested which various belief about chances and the ominousness of the coming year. In the coldest days of the year, the celebration of the welcome of the new year has become traditional by having fun under the snow in village of Livera all together.
