Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the state of being covered of social participation ability, which is one of five basic skills in Social Studies subject, within Social Studies course books, student books, and teacher guidebooks. In line with this aim, the unit on “the Adventure of Democracy” throughout which the goal is to gain students the social participation ability was investigated. The research is a qualitative study. The data was collected by means of the technique of document analysis. The data was analyzed also with descriptive analysis. In result of the study, it was found that a substantial part of the skills among social participation abilities (engagement in activities, working individually in activities, working in collaboration with a group, taking responsibilities for social issues, assisting non-governmental organizations, dealing with social problems, founding a group for social issues, and respecting for human rights and democracy principles) are not included in the examined course books, student books and teacher guidebooks.
