Abstract

The “Thinking Styles” concept is based on the mental self-government theory, which was developed by Sternberg. The theory is based on the assumption that the mind of an individual, who organizes thinking, is reflected in the external world. According to the mental self-government theory, the thinking style that is not intelligence or talent is defined as the way of employing the intelligence or skill. The hypothesis claims that individuals have a profile consisting of multiple styles rather than one single style. A total of 151 music teachers participated in the present study, which was conducted to determine the thinking styles of music teachers and to examine the status of these thinking styles according to some variables. The data of the present study were obtained by the Personal Information Form, which was prepared by the researcher; and with the Thinking Styles Inventory, which was developed by Sternberg and Wagner (1991). The inventory was translated into Turkish by Fer (2005), and the validity and reliability study of it was conducted by her. The data that were obtained with the Thinking Styles Inventory and the Personal Information Form were analyzed by employing the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Descriptive Statistical Techniques. As a result of the present study, which was conducted to examine the thinking styles of music teachers, it was determined that the music teachers who participated in the study generally had the Legislative, Executive, Judicial, Hierarchic, Global and Liberal Thinking Styles except for the age, duration of working as a teacher and individual instrument played variables.
