Abstract

Based on as a “wordless novels” and ‘woodcut novels’ in the literature, they tell a story only illustrations without any words. First wordless novels arise in Europe and the narrated narratives which contain social content oriented for adults are dramatic fiction. Woodcut technique is used as the production technique. The reason is that, people ascribe sociological and political image result of using printing technique as a tool to express social content subjects for that period in German expressionism. Thereby, wordless novel emerges at the end of the first World War, which is thought to be influenced by the silent film period, is regarded as the precedent of graphic novel in terms of narrative method and originality. In this paper, woodcut-wordless novel and the first woman artist Helena Bochorakova-Dittirichova who make wordless novel with woodcut technique are investigated.
