Abstract

The aim of the study is to specify the participant university students’ leisure time management and loneliness levels, and to reveal the relationship between these two concepts. The study sample consisted of 285 volunteer university students, 138 of whom were male while 102 of were female. These students were from Istanbul University, Sports Sciences Faculty and were selected using the purposive sampling method. The study instruments were the “Leisure Time Management Scale,” which was developed by Wang et al. (2011) and adapted into Turkish by Akgül and Karaküçük (2015), and the “Ucla Loneliness Scale” which was developed by Demir (1989). Percent and frequency methods were applied to determine the range of participants’ personal information, and the Shapiro Wilk normality test was applied to determine if the data was of a normal distribution. After the data was found to be appropriate for parametric test conditions, MANOVA and ANOVA were used to reveal the differences between the participants’ leisure time management levels and loneliness levels in terms of certain demographic properties. Also, the Pearson Correlation test was administered to determine the relationship between leisure time management and loneliness levels. To the MANOVA test results, a statistically meaningful difference was found in leisure time total scores in terms of “gender” and “weekly leisure time” (p<0.05). To the Pearson Correlation test conducted to see the relationship between the scores of Leisure Time Management Scale (LTMS) and Ucla Loneliness Scale (ULS) scores, there was a low and negative correlation between LTMS and ULS. It was also concluded that the participants’ leisure time management levels and loneliness levels significantly differed in terms of certain demographic variables, and that as their leisure time management levels improved, loneliness levels were seen to decrease.
