Abstract

Developments arising from globalization effects on technology and the social media concept, which is one of the new communication environments brought with these developments has created a new media which is different from traditional media by enabling bidirectional communication. Social media platforms, have adapted and become a part of our lives in a short time, also have become an important channel for the political leaders in order to communicate with the public. Moreover, social media platforms have become a tool for political leaders; political leaders constantly use for many purposes such as enlightenment, disseminating propaganda, responding to counter view public, making announcements and explanations, taking place in memories by reaching the target audience. The subject of this academic study is how and for what purposes political leaders use Twitter, one of the most popular social media platforms for political purposes. The usage of the Twitter for political purposes before the pre-election period (June 9, 2018) and after the election (10 July 2018) by political leaders, who passed the 5% threshold of presidential election of Republic of Turkey in the June 24, 2018 is the main subject of this academic study, since the most intense time period was pre-election and post-election. The total tweet content of the official Twitter accounts of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Muharrem İnce, Meral Akşener and Selahattin Demirtaş who passed the threshold of the presidential election in accordance with the election results within the context of political communication, have been examined by content analysis method and the results were evaluated comparatively during the fifteen day period before and after the election.
