Smart phones are among the indispensables of daily life in adolescents with the developing technology. Indulging in the smartphone increases the risk of addiction. Pathological use of the smartphone in the addiction dimension can lead to various changes in the mental state of adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of psychological abuse on smartphone addiction in adolescents. The data were obtained from 155 students attending two High School in the Çınar district of Diyarbakır province. The Smartphone Addiction Scale and Emotional Abuse Questionnaire were used in the study. Independent groups t test, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test and Linear Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings showed that age, frequency of using a smart phone, frequency of looking at a smartphone before doing a job, frequency of thinking that life is empty and boring without a phone, neglecting daily works have a positive effect on smartphone addiction. Intimidation-humiliation and rejection-isolation sub-scales of the Emotional Abuse Questionnaire were found to have a high level of impact on smartphone addiction. Those who always check their phones, those who often think that life without a smartphone is empty and boring, those who always neglect their daily work because of the phone and those who spend their free time on the Internet were found to have the highest addiction scores. Emotional abuse was found to be highly effective on smartphone addiction in adolescents.
