Abstract

Studying on city and urban structures David Harvey discusses that for the city right reaching the urban resources is more than an individual right, and that as a shared (social) right it changes the city as well as us. Again in the analyze of the city theory he discovers that there is a direct relationship between the organization of the city structure, and the usual organization of the capital, in other words a close relationship between the development of the capitalism, and the urbanization. Georg Simmel, on the other hand, interprets the conditions and problems the city causes acoording to the money economy in his article, “Metropolis and Mental Life”. The first change with the phenomenon of migration, beginning in our country, especially in 1960’s brings along the individuals’ familiar with rural life, transferring into ferro-concrete houses voluntarily initially, obligatory later, and in this context the spatial ruptures and organizations. In this study the documentary movies, “Bir Yenilginin Anatomisi” [An Anatomy of a Defeat] Hasan Özgen directed in 2016, and “Yabancılar Giremez” [Foreigners not Allowed], made produced by Al Jazeera Turk channel to Babil Film in 2014 are discussed. In each documentary the phenomenon of “modernization and urbanization” we come across especially after 1980 is approached in the context of spatial changes, and the social movements, and cultures these changes have produced. With reference to the images and interviews in the documentaries mentioned above the roles of the using of the city as the place and center of the settlement in the building of the new lives of the individuals will be discussed in the light of David Harvey and Georg Simmel’s notions.
